In viewing the special social terms and the historical development of Taiwan, temple stands as the center of traditional religious beliefs for the Han people in Taiwan. The culture deriving from the temple not only attached directly to the worshiped deities, spaces and religious objects in the temple, its structure embedded in related activities, ceremonies and festivity customs is foremost an important social and cultural heritage in Taiwanese traditional religion beliefs. Dung-lung Temple Dahan Band is affiliated directly to Dung-kang Dung-lung Temple. Its two major tasks include performing in the Dung-kang King Boat Ritual and in ceremonies (Beiguan、Guangdong Music) held by the temple itself. It played a vital role in religious ceremonies and traditional folk activities.Dahan Chinese Orchestra plays a diverse list of music. Its current performances consists of Beiguan , Guangdong Music and Modern Chinese Music. It has a history of over 30 years and over 300 members. Viewing from the development and inheritance perspectives of religious music, Dahan Chinese Orchestra has featured high research value.
Dung-kang King Boat Ritual dates back far in history. It has experienced dramatic social changes. Instead of losing the essence of traditional beliefs, the scale and complicity of the ritual expands.In the triennial grand event King Boat Ritual, the King Boat road touring procession is the most acclaimed event. The parade is phenomenal. It is made to be one of the Top 3 folk cultural festivities.The religious belief group of Dung-kang Dung-lung Temple is grand and rigorous. Almost the whole of Dung-kang is devoted. This thesis is to discuss about Dung-lung Temple Dahan Chinese Orchestra, how its musical performances carried out according to the ritual relates to religious beliefs, and how the diversity of temple music develops.
I will explore the representative status and social function of the diverse music structured Dahan Chinese Orchestra in religious events, and discover the value of preserving and continuing traditional cultures in the long history heritance of religious beliefs.
