The adult education course “Personality and Life” was conducted for one semester, 18 hours, from September 2008 through January 2009 in Cheng Hsiu University. Studying the 30 students, who took this course, by using the approach of action research, the researcher tried to enrich their aesthetic experiences in order to fulfill their lives through the teaching of four subjects. The thesis is based on the following theories: Freire’s “dialogue teaching”, Mezirow’s “transformative learning”, Dewey’s “art, experience and education” as well as “learning by doing”, and Knowles’ theories of adult education. Centered on the development of “self,” the course is divided into four subjects: “discovering oneself”, “harmonious relationships”, “social participation”, and “reconstruction and creativity”. There are 18 teaching units. An experimental teaching was carried out through “self-directed learning”. The researcher played two roles in the course—the designer and the teacher. The researcher tried to find out ways to upgrade the learners’ quality of life and to bring better changes to them in terms of the concept, the attitude, the behavior, and the emotion. It was hoped that through class participation learners could have access to their inner beauty and achieve a sense of satisfaction as well as aesthetic pleasure.
