Muscle power of lower extremity is crucial to quality of ADL and falling risk. It’s an efficient way to use sit-to-stand (STS) movement to evaluate power of elderly and the ability to perform STS independently and safely is very important in ADL ability of elders. Therefore, to quantify and differentiate the kinetics during STS task between healthy elderly and faller group will be helpful to understand the falling risk of elderly. However, there’s less study in defining specific correlations between falling risk, functional ability and kinetic and kinematic performance during STS task. Purpose: (1) To compare kinetic performance in STS movement among young adults, healthy elders and fall elders. (2) To compare functional and balance ability and kinetic parameters between healthy elders and fall elders, and the correlation between falling risk and kinetic performance. Method: Thirty-four subjects were recruited to participate in this study. They were categorized into healthy elders(14), fall elders(9) and young adults(11). Kinetic performance of STS and their functional ability were evaluated. A single-axis force plate with data acquisition (DAQ) systeman and Fastrak (Polhemus, USA) were used to analyse kinetic and kinematic parameters in each group. One-way ANOVA test was used to compare differences in 3 groups(p<0.05) and Pearson’s correlation was used to identify correlations between falling risk and STS performance. Results: Stabilization time and lower limb power during fast speed STS were the most effective parameters to differentiate three groups and showed strong correlations with Berg Balance Scale(BBS) (stabilization time: r=-0.854, normalized powe: r=0.736) and Timed Up and Go test(TUG) (stabilization time: r=0.788, normalized powe: r=-0.727). Conclusion: Kinetic performance in STS can differentiate between fall elders and healthy elders and it strongly correlates with functional ability (TUG) and balance ability (BBS), which indicate falling risks in elderly.
