On professional ethics and the construction of a code of ethics for industrial designers in Taiwan

碩士 === 雲林科技大學 === 工業設計系碩士班 === 98 === This study aims to set up a code of ethics for industrial designers in Taiwan. The research was conducted in three phases. First, codes of ethics from six design associations’ websites in the world were collected for reference. The six codes of ethics from overseas were then analyzed and compared to construct a basic framework of aspects relating to the design stakeholders. Second, based on the analysis result, in-depth interviews were conducted to solicit opinions and views of industrial design practitioners, promoters, and educators. Based on the interview result, a questionnaire was then constructed for further survey. In the final survey, a total of 204 valid questionnaires were collected from designers, educators, promoters, employers, students, and the public. Their agreement with the surveyed items would be used as a basis for drafting the code of ethics. Finally, a total of 32 articles are drafted in relation to 8 aspects: the association, the profession, the public, colleagues, employers/clients, employees, students and users. The result of this study could not only be a reference for drafting a formal code of professional ethics for industrial designer in Taiwan but also be a material of ethical education for education department. In addition, information gathered from this study could as well be a useful reference for other professional design organizations to the establishment of their respective code of ethics.
