It generally includes a planetary gear mechanism and a power transmission control mechanism. The purpose of this work is to develop a systematic methodology for the design of power transmission control mechanisms of multi-speed bicycle drive hubs. The R&D documents and related patents concerning power transmission control mechanisms of multi-speed drive hubs are studied and classified first. A planar-graph representation is then presented to arrange desired clutches, locking members, and switching members into the planetary gear mechanism according to the related clutching sequence, which carries out the main body of the power transmission control mechanism. Finally, a design process is develop for the implementation of multi-speed drive hubs for bicycles. A design example with 16-speed is also illustrated.
