In this study, through a light sensor on TV, it senses the illumination of the environment and automatically changes the backlight uminance and the associated power consumption. We used a commercial flyback converter DC output feeding to the LED backlight module. Using a light sensor on TV, we can detect the illumination of environment and we in turn can through FPGA adjust an appropriate duty cycle and the corresponding backlight luminance for the TV LED loads. At the laboratory, an optimum function curve was generated to reflect the relationship between the illumination of the environment and the preferred comfortness or luminance of TV. Six individuals, 3 men and 3 women, with their average age being 28 years were selected to give their human eyes’ responses and inputs to this curve. This curve can be programed into the FPGA. From experiments, it was found that the relationship between illumination of the environment and the TV luminance is not a simple linear function. At higher illumination of the environment above 500 Lux to 1500 Lux, the TV luminance even reduces accordingly. Finally, for our intelligent TV with backlight module, five different cases with environmental luminance conditions were analyzed and the resultant power consumptions were evaluated.
