Under the influence of globalization, artists walk out of studios and interact with the world in order to fully act their talents and potentials. Art field has become more diverse and integrated into life gradually. Artist village as a way of cultural exchange has been deveveloped in Europe and U.S. for centuries. Formed in a variety of ways, it makes a great contribution to the development of contemporary art through the function of international cultural exchange. Artists use it as an international platform to share and have a dialogue with others from all over the world. For the past over ten years, those who resided in artist villages of Taiwan have been incorporating local culture into their art. They play significant roles of cultural messengers between global communities. Taipei Artist Village (TAV), the first artist village in Taiwan, is one of the major exchange platforms for local and international artists. As an international artist village located in city, TAV profoundly influences on artists and cities in between. The study aims to provide some suggestions based upon current situations of cultural exchange in TAV.
The thesis includes five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction. Chapter Two first discusses the significance and development of artist village, and then explores the meaning of globalization in order to conclude the current ways of cultural exchange in Taiwan. Chapter Three analyzes interaction situations between artists resided in artist villages of Taiwan as well as their interaction with the general public. Chapter Four investigates the growth of internationalization in artist villages of Taiwan and the role of artists as the medium of international cultural exchange via villages. Finally the last chapter summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of TAV and provides some suggestions.
