Thus, the performance of container terminal usually is one of the most determinants of port selections for shipping companies. However, most of the past relevant studies focus on the comparisons among port performances. Few study discussed the related issues about performance assessment of container terminals. Based on the relevant literature and the features of container terminals, the input ant output items for performance assessment of container terminals were first examined. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was then employed to construct the model of performance assessment for container terminal operators. For validating the model, the five container terminals (coded A~E) operated by famous carriers at Kaohsiung Port were investigated. Results showed that container terminal B is the most inefficient, and it may result from a shortage in loading/unloading volumes of containers. The result of empirical study could provide practice information for carriers to improve their operation performance of container terminals. Furthermore, the result could also provide references for relevant studies about the performances of container terminals.
