The interactions between conjugated polymer and fullerene in solution can be characterized via light scattering measurements, and the result is useful to understand the mechanisms driving phase separations in BHJ films. We study the aggregate properties of mixed poly(2-methoxy-5-(2’-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenyl-ene-vinylene) (MEH-PPV) and fullerene, C60 or [6,6]-Phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCMB), in toluene or chlorobenzene by combined dynamic and static light scatterings. Because of a fair dispersion of PCBM in toluene or chlorobenzene, the aggregate properties are primarily dominated by MEH-PPV in both solvent systems. In contrast, C60 forms large aggregate clusters in chlorobenzene at moderate concentrations, so that the aggregate properties are dictated by both MEH-PPV and C60. In contrast, due to a generally poor solubility of C60 in toluene, MEH-PPV was noted to control the aggregate properties for the dilute solutions investigated.
