Photocatalytic hydrogen production by water splitting has received much attention due to its applications as a clean energy source. It has become the hot topic in scientific research. In this study, we used a simple experimental procedure to prepare the titanium dioxide - carbon nanotube photocatalyst composite, and applied to photocatalytic hydrogen production. First, a layer of titanium film was deposited on the carbon nanotubes. Titanium dioxide - carbon nanotube composite was oxidated in the atmosphere at 350oC. Finally, we got the Pt-TiO2-CNT composite by using the incipient wetness impregnation method. The morphology of Pt-TiO2-CNT composite was characterized by TEM and SEM, and the crystallization of the sample by XRD. By adjusting the experimental parameters, such as: different photocatalysts, homemade CNTs or commercial CNTs, different sputtering times, platinum loading, calcination temperature, and weight of photocatalyst. We expected to get the sample with higher hydrogen production rate and also refered to the many articles on literature of photocatalytic water splitting reaction mechanisms and principles, to understand the reasons for the experimental results. The photocatalysts which have highest hydrogen production rate were using the commercial CNTs, sputtering time of four minutes and six minutes, and the platinum catalyst content of 1wt%, and without calcining, while the hydrogen production rate are higher than 800 micro-mol/g h.
