碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 台灣文學研究所 === 99 === A critique of love and religion in the novels by Hua Yan Chia-Yin Yen ABSTRACT Hua Yan’s novels first appeared in the 1970’s. The 1980’s, the period when female writers reached a height in readership, was also the time her works became most popular. As with most of the novels written by female authors, her books were focused on the ups and downs of love and relationships. Contrary to other writers, her works took a religious angle in interpreting the confrontations, obstacles and challenges, seeking to persuade readers to find the right the perspectives from the pursuit of love while emphasizing women’s self awareness and identity. Simply put, Hua Yan used her novels as teachings to elevate the reader’s mind. This study looked into the special attributes in Hua Yan’s novels, particularly the frameworks of love and religion and the articulation in the plots to analyze the unique features of these novels. At the same time, the study looked closer into the life of Hua Yan and the relationship between the social background and her works. Through these perspectives, this study hoped to shed more light to the limited studies currently available on Hua Yan.
