The use of this masonry material as a recycled resource is essential for the purposes of environmental protection and self-sustaining management in the region where resource of natural material is limited for construction projects. Crushed masonry blocks collected from construction sites were used in the study as a recycled material substituted for natural coarse aggregate which has been retrieved from many river-bed quarries and has become a major problem in river resource management in Taiwan. A series of laboratory tests were conducted with various water/cement ratio to study the property of the concrete mixed with coarse aggregate of 0, 30, 60, and 100% substituted with the recycled aggregate. Results of the study revealed that the 28-day compression strength of the concrete specimens with recycled aggregate is about 76%, 57.5% and 61.5% of regular concrete without recycled aggregate for the water/cement ration of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5, respectively. Also, use of crushed masonry blocks significantly increases the abrasion up to about 190% of the concrete. Preliminarily, the study suggests that the concrete mixed with crushed masonry blocks should not be used in pavement concrete for automobile traffic as well in river-bed or river-side flood defense construction where erosion may cause severe damages. Results of the study, however, recommend that the crushed masonry blocks may be used as recycled aggregates for concrete mix in some selected non-standard concrete such as controlled low strength material (CLSM) with mater/cement ration of 1.0 and 1.5 for pipe-line trench backfilling. In addition, pedestrian walkway and pavement for light traffic in farm land can also be paved with the concrete mixed with the recycled aggregate of crushed masonry blocks studied in the research.
