Quartz crystal components play essential roles in electronic products because of their low temperature sensitivity, outstanding durability and sufficient accuracy. In past years, for quartz crystal devices, the total demand was ordinary and their global production output value was in general level. Moreover, production of quartz crystal devices was regarded as a so-called “unattractive industry” before the germ of network communication industry. Nevertheless, quartz crystal components industry is currently growing speedily along with the vigorous development of computer, communications, consumer electronic products and other industrial markets. In recent years, the demand has been not only increasing continually in upstream applications, but also raising year by year for the application in wireless devices such as Bluetooth, W-LAN, iPod, set-up box, etc. The first part of this research applies data envelopment analysis (DEA) to explore the operational performance of quartz crystal components companies in Taiwan, for which the objects are totally eight publicly traded or over-the-counter quartz crystal companies. CCR model of DEA is adopted to acquire production efficiency value, and then calculate pure efficiency value and scale efficiency value through BCC model. In the second part of this research, Malmquist productivity index is used to study various performance indicators regarding efficiency and productivity, where the issue of multi-year efficiency is analyzed with Malmquist theory, for the purpose of achieving useful reference information for performance improvement.
