In reality, numerous college students of Feng Chia University need to rent off-campus. However, it is usually lack of perfect managerial facilities around rental environment that cause robbers, robbery, burglary, sexual offense, and other public security problems. This study applies geographic information system (GIS) combined with mapping information of Feng Chia University students’ rental location and historical criminal cases to find out spatial distribution of criminal cases. The research results contribute to provide improvement suggestions of student dormitory safety in Feng Chia University.
In this study, we aggregate reporting data of Taichung City Police Department in 2010 and Feng Chia University students’ rental information to develop a “Public security and crime spot figure and GIS management system”. In this system, we input spatial distribution data of rental and criminal cases and generate research results by statistical analysis, crossing analysis, and figure-mapping analysis. Based on our research results, we find that some criminal cases have spatial distribution effects and relative to Feng Chia University students’ rental location. In particular, we provide specific actions for criminal prevention and punishment. Moreover, according to governmental and social safety network establishment proposal, we propose an active method: “Risk evaluation and authentication of public security”. This method is to enhance criminal prevention and punishment and quick response to ambient area of Feng Chia University and rental environment in addition to protect students’ life and property safety in rent off-campus.
