The main objective of this study is designing the safe, non-toxic and environmental benign chemicals to substitute the hazardous chemicals. Conventionally, the organic solvents including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as dichloromethane, trichloroethylene, chloroform, n-hexane, benzene, and toluene are used for liquid-liquid extraction system. However, these solvents are proven to be toxic, flammable, high volatile and have high risk impact to the environment and human body. As the environmental regulations are becoming more and more stricter. The worldwide nations necessary to legislate against polluted chemicals and seeking ways replace the organic solvent to a much safer green solvent. In recent year, lots of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are the newly designed to meet the specific task. Ionic liquids own superior characteristics such as non-flammable, non-volatile, recyclable, and most importantly environmental benign.
This study makes the best use of RTILs to replace the highly toxic solvents for endocrine disrupter chemicals (EDCs) extraction from aqueous solution. First, three 10 mg/L of EDCs solution of bisphenol-A (BPA), nonyl phenol and dimethylphthalate were prepared. The ionic liquid [BMPy][Tf2N] i.e.1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonnyl)imide and organic solvents such as dichloromethane and n-hexane were used for EDCs extraction and the efficiency were compared with one another. For bisphenol A, the best extraction efficiency reaches 99.9% with 0.5 mL [BMPy][Tf2N] at pH=2. For nonyl phenol, the best extraction efficiency reaches 99% with 0.5 mL [BMPy][Tf2N] at pH=2. For dimethylphthalate, the best extraction efficiency reaches 99.9% with 0.5 mL [BMPy][Tf2N] at pH=2. In a 10 mg/L each mixed aqueous solution of BPA, nonyl phenol and dimethylphthalate, the best extraction efficiency reaches 98.2% with 0.5 mL [BMPy][Tf2N] at pH=2. However, same extraction procedures by using dichloromethane and n-hexane the extraction efficiency were only 30-90%. This experiment results showed that the environmental hormones extraction efficiency from aqueous solution by ionic liquid [BMPy][Tf2N] are greater than that dichloromethane and n-hexane. Our experimental results have proven that the green solvent [BMPy][Tf2N] could replace conventionally toxic organic solvents in removal of BPA, nonyl phenol and dimethylphthalate from wastewater.
