It depicted vividly the reality of Chinese society in Qing dynasty in the context of ghost stories. Thus, Liaozhai can be viewed as a work of ghost stories reflecting reality. With the frequent interaction between China and Britain, Liaozhai was translated into English several times. This thesis focus on the two translations by Giles and Allen, and probes into the differences of two translations by translators of a similar background. Chapter one includes the motivation, objective, and related search regarding Liaozhai. From the second chapter on, it analyzes the two translations. In Chapter two, it analyzes different styles of the translations in terms of title, contents, notes, and omission. In Chapter three, it further probes into the concept of god, fairy, and ghost, with the comparison of the ideas in both Britain and China, and of what influence in translators and translation. In Chapter four, it focuses on the distorted female image and the factors behind it.
