Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔英科技大學 === 護理系碩士班 === 99 === The aim of the present study was to investigate the usefulness of acupressure on sleep quality in geriatric psychiatric patients. A quasi-experimental design was applied to 60 patients admitted to geriatric ward of a psychiatric hospital in south Taiwan. By using convenience sampling method, all of the participants were randomly assigned to intervention and control group. Every patients in both group received standard health care, but an additional acupressure intervention program was applied to those in the intervention group. The intervention program included a 9-minute acupressure daily for 4 weeks. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Actigraphy were assessed before and after the study period. ANCOVA analysis was used to look for differences between and within these two groups. Statistical significance was set at p < .05. Results: Subjective sleep quality which included sleep latency, sleeping duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, use of hypnotic, day-time functioning, and sleep quality and some items in objective sleep quality that included sleep latency, sleeping duration, sleep efficiency and number of awakening had significant improvement after intervention. In addition, all of the variables except wakeful time in objective sleep quality were significantly better than those in control group. Acupressure is a unique and effective intervention that may improve sleep quality in geriatric psychiatric patients.
