With PMUs, we can totally know the situations of power system without solving power flow or state estimation. Therefore, the reliability and security of power system can be raised by PMUs. With the increase of applications, Taiwan Power Companyset upbythe ADX PMU products are increased. It is foreseeable that the computational load will exceed in the near future. For the real time response of operation and the convenience of clients, it is necessary to upgrade the DSP processor. However, with the great progress in hardware, it is not just to upgrade the DSP processor, but have to integrate each function cards in the ADX series products, rewrite the programs and consider the new method to expand the functions for the future demands. In this paper, we chose embedded system and FPGA to achieve these jobs. This is because embedded system is easy to integrate hardware, has enough computational capability, and has internet to transmit increasing data to users or to update firmware.
