ZigBee has been designed to possess general-purpose protocol with low cost, low power consumption and self networking; it is suitable for industrial automation and therefore this thesis utilizes ZigBee to develop and design an energy saving and management system for intelligent home. The proposed system is composed of data router module, device control module, ZigBee-to-IrDA control module, smart meter module, smart plug-in socket module, control and management module of rear-end Supervisory Control And Data Acgusition (SCADA) system. ZigBee-to-IrDA control module is used to control traditional home appliances which can only be controlled by IrDA. All modules possess a ZigBee-based communication interface. Those modules are developed based on the MCU of Microchip DSPIC33J256GP710, ZigBee chip of Microchip MRF24J40 and energy metering chip of Microchip MCP3909 and so on. The rear-end SCADA system is used to monitor the status of each module and to manage the power consumption by smart plug-in socket module and ZigBee-to-IrDA control module while power consumption was over the pre-defined limit (such as contractual capacity). Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed system and show that proposed system can control the energy consumption systematically to achieve the purposes energy saving and carbon reduction.
