These three fictions were chosen to enter the “Wen Yi Chuang Zuo” writing competition and won the Chinese Art and Culture award. We are going to analyze why these works won the award and whether they can sustain their value through time from the following perspectives: Pan Ren Mu’s biography, the background of the writing competition, the theme of the three fictional works, the evolution of the characters, and the art of linguistic presentation. Chapter One: Introduction This chapter has three sections. First, the purpose for this study of Pan’s works. Second, the result of previous studies on these works, and third, the analytical methodology adopted in this essay. Chapter Two: The biography of Pan Ren-Mu and the introduction of his works This chapter has four sections. First, Pan’s childhood in China and his writing career since he moved to Taiwan. Second, Pan’s pen name, record of awards and his works. Third, the literary environment and themes in the fifties, as well as the necessity of writing competitions at that time. Finally, we shall discuss the contents of his three works as mentioned above. Chapter Three: The themes, constructions and plots of the fictional works This chapter has three sections. First, we analyze the themes in these three works through four perspectives: the propaganda of anti-communism, the growth of feminism, the emotions of nostalgia for one’s homeland, and the thirst for freedom. Second, the analysis of Pan’s construction of stories through his principles, styles, and plot development. Finally, we look into the points of view, coincidences, hidden suggestions, suspensions, exaggerations, and the unrealistic plots in the stories. Chapter Four: The Molding of the Characters This chapter has four sections. All these three works have a female as the main character. Therefore, we will first look at the images of these three female characters, and then we shall study how the personalities of these three main characters are influenced by their parents and friends around them. Furthermore, we study the images of communists who led the main female character into suffering and how the people from the Kuo-Min Dang save the heroines. Last, we shall look at the other images of the people around the heroines. Chapter Five: The Presentation of the Art of the Language This chapter has three sections: First, from the narrator’s voice and the character’s voice, the language characteristics will be looked at in the three fictional works. Second, from literary skills such as analogy, transformation and symbolism, we shall analyze how the language is exercised. Finally, we study the style of the language through parallelism and repetition. Chapter Six: Conclusion This chapter has four sections: First, from the basis of Pan’s writing methodology, we study why Pan became the most prominent writer of his time and enjoy such a degree of fame within the literary field. Second, from the anti-communism perspective, we conclude how Pan’s works match the principles of the writing competition, why he won the award, and the propaganda impact of such a writing competition. Third, from the construction of the plots, images of the characters, and the art of linguistic presentation, we infer why Pan’s award winning works have survived the test of time. Finally, apart from Pan’s award winning works, his short stories also deserve attention for further study, especially those focusing on culture and people in the Xin-Jiang area. 作者未提供 游秀雲 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 415 zh-TW
