Summary: | 碩士 === 明道大學 === 課程與教學研究所 === 99 === The topic of this study focused on the math-word problems’ solving abilities for the 4th grade new inhabitant students. The first purpose of the study was to explore how reciprocal teaching would affect 4th grade new inhabitant students performance on reading and mathematic abilities. The second purpose was to analyze what problems they faced while learning math-word problems’ solving.
A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Samples of this study were selected purposely from the 4th graders of an elementary school in Changhua County, and then divided into two groups, the experimental group and the controll group. In addition, sixteen new inhabitant students were chosen as samples. Data were gathered by “Reading Comprehension Test”, “Two-step Arithmetic Word Problems Math Test”, the researcher’s journals, and the semi-structured interviews. The statistical package SPSS version 12.0 was employed for the statistical analyses. Qualitative and quantitative findings were integrated to provide a thorough understanding and discussions.
After the implementation of reciprocal teaching experiment, there was significant difference between the experimental group, the 4th grade new inhabitant students , and the controll group on the performance of “Reading Comprehension Test ”. But, there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the controll group on the performance of the two-step arithmetic word problems math test. The new inhabitant students and the general students in reading and mathematics study were found with highly significant differences. The main difficulty is to read "Understanding the meaning of words" and "inferential comprehension". The main mathematical difficulty is that "representation. " The identity of students of different reading ability and math skills were also positively correlated.
These results indicated that reciprocal teaching in general and the new inhabitant students will help all students learn how to read and understand, but also to reduce the achievement gap. The study also found the reading comprehension difficulties of new inhabitant students will affect mathematics learning. Reading may help all students learning mathematics better.
Based on the research findings, some recommendations and suggestions are provided as practical references for educational authorities, school administration, elementary school teachers, and future researchers.
