We also modify different functional group in the meso phenyl of the porphyrin dimers (YDD4-m-C5, YDD4-o-C5, YDD5-o-C5) to protect the porphyrin molecules from dye aggregation for an efficient electron injection and to form a blocking layer on TiO2 surface for a retarded charge recombination. These porphyrin dyes are connected with TiO2 through the carboxylic acid base , then apply to the solar cell. The preparation of these dyes with ethyne-linked functional groups can be achieved by the Sonogashira cross-coupling. The series of push-pull porphyrin dimers shows split Soret bands in the range 400–500 nm, and red shifts and broadening of the Q bands due to interporphyrin electronic coupling. After this type of porphyrin dyes improve its solubility, the power conversion efficiency might be good. The meso,meso-linked porphyrin dimer (YDD5) exhibited the best photovoltaic performance with JSC/mA cm-2 = 17.78, VOC/mV = 712.83, and FF = 0.754, giving an efficiency η = 9.63% of power conversion by Michael Gratzel’s group. We believe that it will be helpful to power conversion efficiency if we continue to modify different functional group in the meso-positions of the porphyrin.
