Summary:碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 國際政治研究所 === 99 === “Cultural diplomacy” has been one of the important issues in the field of international relations in recent years. It’s the application of “soft power” to promote the influence of a country in the world affairs. Cultural diplomacy is an important part of Japan’s foreign policy. It has powerful effects on realizing Japan’s national interests as well as promoting this country’s national image. Pop-culture diplomacy has been practiced by the Japanese government since 2007. It has been expected to influence the young generation around the world and to promote Japan’s status in international platform. The aims of this thesis are to research how Japan uses her abundant soft power resources on cultural diplomacy and to discuss the influence and effects of the pop-culture diplomacy. It is found that soft power is fully used in Japan’s cultural diplomacy in the 21st century. The purposes are to let Japan accepted by other countries and allow Japanese cultural integrated in international community. In the field of pop-cultural diplomacy, the pop-culture is adopted to promote the image of “Cool Japan”;it also suffers challenges from different aspects, however.
