It is for the purpose of making an overview about the reading market in Taiwan during Japanese Colonial Era, and of outlining the background and conditions of Taiwanese literature development. Furthermore, it discusses the impact of the dissemination of knowledge in Taiwan. First, this study introduced the background and development of the reading market during Japanese Colonial Era in Taiwan. On the basis of the institute of educational systems, the popularity of literacy public, and the establishment of publishing system, the study explored the foundation of reading market and the transition of reading culture by means of publishing circulation, book advertising, reading behavior, and meaning of reading. Later, the political restriction and influence over printing and publishing was included into discussion. The reading market during Japanese Colonial Era in Taiwan experienced the knowledge manufacturing, the modernization of communication, and the conflict between Chinese and Japanese culture. In addition, linguistic transformation and the practice of modern academic system brought about the extent and form of knowledge dissemination. Traditional reading behavior was spread by reading the newspapers, which resulted in a strong connection between book advertisements and reading popularization. The diversity of the media and the difference in the publishing advertisement not only were taken into commercial consideration, but also reflected how readers took notice of it. From publishing to popularization, reading behavior itself became a good way to observe social meanings as well as the relationship between different social classes. Various reading forms expressed different features or purpose, and pleasures as well. Reading itself made the communication working between action and acquirement. Furthermore, it showed the readers’ various perspectives of imagination and the structural, annotated, and cultural progress of the society. All these formed the distinctive connotation in Taiwan during Japanese Colonial Era.
