碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 生物醫學科技研究所 === 99 === Sleeping is universal among animals. They just differ at the duration of sleep time. Therefore, what is the meaning of sleep is interesting. We decide to analyze the functions of sleeping through its phenomena. In recent years, it is proved that genes of fruit flies are very similar to mammals. Besides, the genome of the fruit flies is decoded completely. Hence, we decided to use fruit flies as bio-models to do the research. By modifying the genes of fruit flies, we can figure out the effectiveness of the gene modification and sleep phenomena, and infer the sleep phenomena, and accordingly the meaning of the mammals. After modifying the genes of fruit flies, we use infrared to detect the activities of fruit flies. By recording these activities, we could converse them to know the sleep activities. There are also many known cardinal factors such as the bout number, bout length, the total sleep time in day and night time and the latency time, etc for analyzing the sleep phenomena. We could infer that some gene modifications may affect the sleep phenomena by these cardinal factors. However, the amount of collected data of experiments is very large. How to deal with such massive data is another question. Therefore, we need a tool could help researchers gather and analyze data quickly, as well as make charts for comparison. Thus the tool can make researchers find out the critical factors more easily.
