Summary: | 碩士 === 國立嘉義大學 === 生物事業管理學系研究所 === 99 === With the rapid development of high technology, patents are economically important and contribute to a firm’s value. However, the value of individual patents is difficult to determine due to the skewed distribution of patent value. As such, the valuation of patents has to rely on some correlates such as backward and forward citations, patent scopes, patent families, particularly within the context of patent renewal.
Generally, patent systems require that the owner of patents pay patent renewal fees periodically to retain legal ownership. So the context of patent renewal provides an interesting window in which to explore how the assignee, or the legal owner of the patent, weighs the costs or benefits of maintaining a patent. This study assumes that the context of patent renewal was adopted as surrogates of patent value, uses patent indicators and social network analysis to find factors that influence patent renewal decision.
The study collected biotech patents of Taiwan and Korea which granted by US Patent and Trademark Office from 1994 to 2006. The analytical results show that many patent indicators and technology knowledge momentum indicators obtained by social network analysis affected the patent renewal decision in Taiwanese and Korean firms and research institutes significantly. Based on the findings, this study provides some guidelines in policy making.
