The purpose of this study was to investigate family backgrounds on the emotional stability and life adjustment of 5th and 6th grade students in elementary schools. The sample consisted of 672 students in public elementary schools in Yunlin County. Stratified cluster sampling and the instruments of Emotional Stability Scale and Life Adjustment Scale were utilized in this research. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation and stepwise multiple regression were further used to analyze the data.
The findings were as following:
1.The means of the emotional stability and life adjustment of the elementary school students were above the medium level.
2.There were significant differences in life adjustment in different family structures and socio-economic status.
3.There was no significant difference in emotional stability and life adjustment between the different nationalities of the students’ mothers.
4.There was a positive relationship on a medium level between emotional stability and life adjustment.
5.Emotional stability and family structure can explain 36.8 percent of life adjustment.
According to the findings, the researcher provided recommendations for parents, teachers, educators, and future research.
