However, the addition of straw pulp in handmade paper often decreases the absorbency of handmade paper, and it is reported that the application of alum in traditional rosin sizing has caused the deterioration of paper seriously. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of alkali treatment of straw pulp on the water absorbency of handmade paper. Commercial alum and paper alum were compared and their impact on the deterioration of handmade paper was also determined. The results showed that alkaline impregnating treatment can really increase the absorbency of handmade paper, and the high temperature alkali treatment show more effective than room temperature treatment. Among the three alkaline impregnating reagents, CaCO3 have the best result, followed by NaOH, and Ca(OH)2 of the worst. Acid leaching after alkali treatment can further improve the water absorbency of paper. All kinds of alum used in this study accelerate the deterioration of paper, and there are different effects among paper alum (Al2(SO4)3) and the commercial alum (KAl(SO4)2 •12H2O).
