Chun-Yuan Chou Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of parental favoritism on self-esteem of adolescents. The study discussed the relationships among gender, birth-order and the perception of parental favoritism of adolescents in Taiwan. A total of 648 teenage students from 6 junior high schools in Taichung County were asked to complete the Parental Favoritism Inventory and the Adolescent Self-Esteem Inventory (ASEI). The two-way MAVONA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data and the results were shown as below: 1.The study showed that there was no interaction of gender and birth-order were found on parental favoritism. 2.The study showed that there were both no gender difference and birth-order difference were found on parental favoritism. 3.The study showed that there were positive correlations between parental favoritism and general self-esteem, between parental favoritism and competent, between parental favoritism and power, between parental favoritism and worthiness, between parental favoritism and academic self-esteem, between parental favoritism and physical self-esteem, between parental favoritism and social self-esteem, and between parental favoritism and family self-esteem. However there were positive correlations between father’s value and evaluation, and between mother’s value and evaluation. 4.The study showed that adolescents’ self-esteem can be predicted from their perception of parental favoritism. Among of all predictors, there was the highest effect from father’s value. Among of all criterions, there was the highest effect size on family self-esteem. Implications of the finding and future research suggestion were also discussed in the study. Keywords: parental favoritism; gender; birth-order; self-esteem.
