碩士 === 國立新竹教育大學 === 人資處語文教學碩士班 === 99 === Abstract The essays of Liu Jing-Juan are literary works inspired from the familiar aspects of our lives, which under her pen vibrantly depict profound philosophies of life. Her penetrating perceptions compel her readers to ponder beyond the surface. In over four decades of her productive career, Liu Jing-Juan’s works had won a number of literary recognition and been included in the recommended junior high school reading list. Her works published in local and foreign publications had been quite popular with readers. Her essays on family and friendship, philosophical exposition, or figures and nostalgia stories embodied Liu Jing-Juan’s kind and gentle nature. Her study under Chi-Chun and later tutelage under Liao Yu-Hui had helped her gain a respected reputation as a female essayist in post-War Taiwan. This paper shall delve into case studies focusing on Liu Jing-Juan’s essays and through the essay study and evaluation, understand and analyze the contents, implications, and writing techniques of Liu Jing-Juan’s essays. This analytical study consists of seven chapters: 1. Chapter One, Foreword, describes the motives and objectives of this study, the study scope, definition of terms, and research methodology and procedure, as well as presents an evaluation of related studies. 2. Chapter Two, Life Experiences and Creative Concepts of Liu Jing-Juan, introduces the life and history of the writer, understands the background of her creativity, and delves into her creative concepts. It also elaborates on the distinctive characteristics of Liu Jing-Juan’s works. 3. Chapter Three starts to delve into the implications of Liu Jing-Juan’s works, conducting a penetrating analysis, categorization and dissection of Liu Jing-Juan’s essays based on the implications of each theme. This chapter mainly delves into her works on family life and classifies her works under four subcategories: Heartwarming Filial Love, Profound Marital Relationships, Moving Family Ties, and Unforgettable Sibling Love. 4. Chapter Four delves into Liu Jing-Juan’s works on nature and the surroundings. Her works in this area were divided into three subcategories: Nostalgia and Hometown Sentiments, Travel Memoirs and Thoughts, and Eulogies to Mother Nature. 5. Chapter Five delves into Liu Jing-Juan’s works on community life and affairs. Her works in this area were divided into three subcategories: City Sights and Street Scenes, Elucidations on Education, and Environmental Protection Sentiments. 6. Chapter Six delves into the essence of Liu Jing-Juan’s essays and her writing styles and techniques. Her works in this area were divided into four subcategories: Penetrating Insights of Themes, Formal Structure and Theme Integrity, Humorous Descriptive and Narrative Styles, and Ingenious Use of Language and Diction. 7. Chapter Seven, Conclusion, sums up the value and impacts of Liu Jing-Juan’s works and contains the conclusion of this study. Keywords: Liu Jing-Juan, modern essays, thematic studies
