However, landslides due to typhoon and heavy rainfall frequently occurred around milage stake 10km on this the road near the Lantai Nursery After the 2005 Haitang typhoon which aggravate the landslides within the study area, the traffic safety of Special Route No. 1 was seriously degraded. In order to understand the landslide mechanism of the area, the Loudong Forest District Office had drilled several reconnaissance holes with instrumentation installed over the known landslide area. It was concluded that the main landslide mechanism was attributed to the precipitous terrain, the inferior geological condition and the abundant surface infiltration within the area. A southeastward displacement of the landslide was also detected from the results of the instrumentation. In this research, a finite element scheme and a finite difference analysis were used to model the stability of slopes in the study area.Comparison was made among the results of these analyses with the results from the limited equlibrium analysis which were suggested in earlier reports of Loudong Forest District Office over the study area. Through this research, the stability status and the trend of landslides were better understood, and the conclusion drawn from this study can also be of great value in planning the remedial meassures of the area.
