Ninety-six young children and their parents were included. Parents were requested to answer a questionnaire about their gender-role rearing attitudes. Children were showed 15 pictures of traditionally gender-stereotyped toys and asked to identify whether these toys were suitable for boys, girls, or both. One week later, they were asked again to predict their parents’ reactions to their choices of gender-specific toys. The data were then analyzed by descriptive statistics and chi-square test. The results showed: 1. Most children’s toy preferences are influenced by their gender stereotypes. 2. Most 3 year-olds predict their parents’ approval of their choices to play all toys. But most 4- to 6-year-olds predict their parents’ disapproval of their choices to play with gender stereotyped or cross-gender toys, except for neutral toys. 3. Most boys and girls predict their parents’ approval of their choices to play with gender stereotyped toys. 4. The parental gender-role rearing attitudes is the same for sons and daughters. 5. Except for two toys, gas stations and kitchen set, the parental gender-role rearing attitudes do not influence children’s choices of toy preferences. Finally, recommendations for kindergarten teachers as well as for further research are included. Li-Fen Chang 張麗芬 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 115 zh-TW
