In Quan-Miou District, there were originally three face-painting Sung Chiang Battle Arrays. But, Xia-Hu Sung Chiang Battle Array was broken up due to a serious loss of population. Only Pitoe and Wu Jia Sung Chiang Battle Arrays still exist now. The face-painting Sung Chiang Battle Array is precious cultural heritage. So, the researcher has the motivation to clarify and record the historical source and skill content. The researcher aimed at studying comprehensively the face-painting of Sung Chiang Battle Array and Wu Jia Sung Chiang Battle Array. The study used historical research to explore: (1) The origin of face-painting Sung Chiang Battle Arrays (2) The origin and organization of Wu Jia Face-Painting Sung Chiang Battle Array (3) The meaning and skill content of Wu Jia Face-Painting Sung Chiang Battle Array The results of the research are as follows: 1. There was several possible origin of the face-painting Sung Chiang Battle Arrays. (1) It was a make-up culture of Sung Chiang Play, which was performed from the stage to the crowd. (2) In order not to be recognized when uprising, the risers made up the faces. (3) The Gods instructed that painting the faces to differentiate the general face-painting Sung Chiang Battle Arrays. (4) The face-painting convention can be connected to Ying-Ge dancing. 2. Quan-Miou District was located in the main market area of eastern Tainan. Residents there were deeply affected by Sinicizing. In order to comfort the spiritual commitment and homesickness, the residents introduced the hometown belief. In Daoguang era, Mr. Lu Ruitai introduced Sung Chiang Battle Array from Fuzhou in Wu Jia area. And Wu Jia Sung Chiang Battle Array is best preserved among the three face-painting Sung Chiang Battle Arrays in Quan-Miou District. Besides one person holding the leading banner, there are 36 members in this array. All of them wear red pants and half of them paint the faces. The inner performers wear white shirts and the outer performers wear yellow shirts. 3. The members of Wu Jia Sung Chiang Battle Array choose six to eight of the twelve patterns to perform. The performing orders are turning circles, waving the banners, showing the arrays, playing obeisance to the god, revealing the axes and the ending pattern. The name of the patterns and performing contents are quite different from the other Sung Chiang Battle Arrays. 4. Wu Jia Sung Chiang Battle Array used to be a force organization to defense the village and it was developed into a religious array. Although it experiences the changes of the society, it still maintains the inheritance of keeping fitness, uniting villagers, promoting religious and culture.
