The in situ surface chlorophyll concentration (0.09 mg m-3) after 7 ~ 16 days passage of the typhoon in the NWP was slightly higher than before typhoon passage (0.07 mg m-3). At the same time, the MODIS Terra model estimated surface chlorophyll concentrations was 0.2 ~ 0.3 mg m-3, which was 2 ~ 3-fold that measured in situ chlorophyll concentrations. The results suggest that satellite observation might be overestimated. The POC flux 7 ~ 11 days after passage of the typhoon was 9.1 ~ 20.3 mg C m−2 d−1 (average 13.0 ± 3.4), which was 1.5-fold that (5.2 ~ 13.1 mg C m−2 d−1, average 8.9 ± 3.9) recorded during a period (July ~ August, 2010) in similar latitude region when no typhoons occurred. The chlorophyll concentrations measured by satellite observations after passage of the typhoon may be overestimated. However, enhanced chlorophyll concentrations within the euphotic zone indeed increase POC flux suggesting that a typhoon causes efficient POC export out of the euphotic zone.
