Using the action research approach, the researcher conducted seventeen forty-minute class sessions in a 4th grade class in an elementary school in Taipei County. Through tests, interviews, classroom observations, students’ worksheets, instructor’s notes and self-reflection diaries, the researcher collected data for analysis. The research findings were as follows. Ⅰ.There are five pillars when designing of the “War and peace of Danshui” global education instructional project. 1. The instructional objectives were decided following the educational goals proposed by U.S. Global Education Forum. 2. The six important contents of this instructional project were summed up from Hong Kong Oxfam, UNESCO and the 1st-9th grades’ curriculum guideline. The six contents were: respect, empathy, appreciation of differences, non-violence, and human communication and cooperation. 3. Based on civic action oriented curriculum design model, the teaching process were divided into three dimensions, i.e., "awareness and concern", "explore and empowerment" and "civic action". 4. The instructional project grasped the curriculum spirit of the learning area of integrated activities, i.e., "experience", "reflection", "Practice" and "integration" of the spirit. 5. Dick & Carey’s systematic instructional design model were followed. II. Difficulties and coping strategies of teaching 1. At first, the project was lack of academic theory support. The researcher reviewed literatures on peace education to derive its core concepts.. 2. At first, the researcher did not have in-depth understanding of Danshui monuments. She conducted many field trips to increase her understanding. 3. Students’ abilities of collecting and screening data from the internet needed to be strengthened. The researcher asked the computer teacher to adjust his teaching plan to teach these abilities, she also asked assistance from teaching assistants. 4. School activities affected the course schedule. Based on the good relationship with the homeroom teacher, the researcher could use the flexible time to catch up the schedule. III. The learning effects of the “War and peace of Danshui” project Students’s performance on knowledge, skills and participation domains in "caring for the global issues of peace" improved significantly after the project. Based on the above findings, the researcher made recommendations for teaching practice and future research.
