The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ spatial behaviors within the campus environment. We aim to understand the preference of primary school children toward their schooling space, the factors which influence children’s decision toward various activity space, and the consistency of their preference spatial and owning space. My experimental methods include recording, observation, interview, and photographing.
The results are listed as the following:
1.Children tend to prefer several activity regions. The first three include: indoor area, sporting area, and playground area. Children take photos frequently in the indoor area because there are many trees with four-season diversities. Also the open space would allow children to play around, to walk, or to observe the nature. Their activity selection could be diverse. It becomes the most popular choice because the area is usually close to their classroom.
2.The factors which influence children’s decision toward various activity space may include activity, space, personal relationship, distance, view, and experience. Based on the interview, we found that personal relationship is not a significant factor for dislike, infrequent, and unsafe locations.
3.Based on the recording and interview, there is a consistency between the preference spatial and the owning space. The first three areas include the indoor area, the sporting area, and the playground.
As a result, campus environment is crucial for children, especially during their study period. There should be a comprehensive and organized plan and design to fulfill the teaching and learning requirement, and also children’s need. This would be also important to make the environmental education properly function.
