Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 書畫藝術學系 === 99 === The characteristics of Chinese painting are inseparable from its distinct expression of lines, which have played an important role in figure painting. The importance that artists throughout history attached to the use of lines provides us a further understanding of the quality of the paintings and the underlying emotions of their painters. Hence, to study the lines in figure paintings and thus apply them to our works, we have to gain a full understanding of its development in history. This thesis is about historical sources of the lines in figure painting and the theory of structure of paintings applied in works. As the importance of the thesis is on the study of figure painting, my focus is historical sources that are useful in creating works. Though the materials were gathered from a wide range of data, I didn’t include all details of Chinese figure painting but I dealed with only those influential painters and their styles, like the Line Drawing of Gonglin and By Stroke of Liang Kai. There are many factors that affect the expression of line, including its relations between emotion, calligraphy, and the object itself. To increase scope of the application of line in figure painting, I study the aesthetics of figure painting and the Western shape theory as well as elements in calligraphy. Lines in works serve many expressive functions with its styles diverse. They represent the vividness of figure painting, the connection to the artistic concept, the relationship between painters and the objects and finally the way painters express their emotion by strokes according to shape theory. Therefore the lines in works are of much importance. How brush strokes in Chinese figure painting developed? What part do they play? How can modern figure painter apply the use of lines to create? By studying the development of lines in figure painting in history, we can get a deeper understanding of different styles, aspects and characteristics of each individual painter, and thus learn how they paid tribute to our respectable forerunners and moreover brought their paintings to a new level of innovation.
