Therefore, the disasters were a very severe problem during Song dynasty. However, these frequent disasters did not influence the nation survival. On the other hand, Song set up sound disaster relief systems. The problem was the resources were much richer in central areas than remote areas. Thus, when natural disasters happened in remote areas, the ways to delivered resources more quickly and efficiently were also important issues of during Song dynasty. The studies of Su Shi were very abundant such as the books or papers of his politics, literature and so on. However, the studies about Su Shi’s natural disaster reliefs are relatively lacking. Therefore, the topic of this paper was decided as “A Study of Su Shi’s prevention and relief of natural disasters.” The core of this paper is the stories about prevention against natural disasters during four decades (AC 1036-1101) when Su Shi was an officer. This paper mainly discusses, in Northern Song, if the disaster resources could be delivered quickly and efficiently to assist people to return the normal life they had before the disasters. The contents include the relief thoughts, the prevention stories and the relief stories both during the disasters and after the disasters. This paper is expected to have a clear and systematic research under this topic. The objective of this paper is to help readers have a thorough understanding of the role of local officers and the disaster reliefs for remote areas during Northern Song.
