Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺南藝術大學 === 博物館學與古物維護研究所 === 99 === Two or more paintings with associated themes and a similar mounting, each of them can be seen as a stand-alone piece, yet when paired become a complete work - they are known as the paired hanging scrolls. In mounting styles for Chinese paintings, a set of hanging scrolls or calligraphy couplets are considered as paired hanging scrolls in a broader sense. However, in Japan, the so-called paired hanging scrolls are mainly referred to as painting works. The custom of hanging paired scrolls in temples and the two sides of the bed has been a tradition practiced up till today since the Muromachi Period. This thesis begins the discussion in Chapter I Introduction and Objective; Scope and Methodology. Chapter II explores the history and mounting styles of paired hanging scrolls, including the construction of mountings and the old system standards of specifications. Chapter III contains a discussion on the background research and data collection, targeting the two paintings- Grapes and Chinchilla (葡萄栗鼠) and Camellia and Blue Bird (藪椿青鳥) . Chapter IV contains an analysis on the cases studied in this research; through scientific testing, a literature review, and field interviews, a record of detailed investigation and current conditions provides information for the planning of a restoration project. Chapter V contains a detailed record of the actual restoration process and recommendations for the preservation and maintenance of private collections. And Chapter VI contains a consolidated conclusion and relevant discussions. This research takes the initial step to explore the styles of paired hanging scrolls through a literature review and the collection of data. Information gained from the study supplies significant references for the remounting work of the two artworks studied in this research. The restoration work continues the life of the artworks and leaves the masterpieces intact for generations to appreciate.
