Paintings in the Dunhuang
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to investigate different dance scene of the West
pure land sutra paintings from various periods.The West pure land sutra
paintings is founded the first dance scene paintings and with most quantities of
the Dunhuang fresco, the paintings were presented on the wall from the early
Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty. The “sutra paintings ” draws from the
Buddhist literature, the West pure land sutra paintings is designed from《The
Three Pure Land SutrasⅠ》and《The Three Pure Land SutrasⅡ》, describe the
heavenly happiness of the Buddhist literature.
The object of this essay is the dance scenes of different Dunhuang caverns
from various periods, to describes, analysis, conclude, and discuss them not only
stands the West pure land sutra paintings in the history, also discover the
connections of the dance, the Buddhist literatures, and the times.
The findings discovered:
first, the dance scene of the West pure land sutra paintings duplicated dancing of
the royal palace.
Second, the main purpose of the Buddhist literatures to emphasis musical tones
is to spread out the Buddhist doctrine, the dance scene makes audiences to
associate happiness of the West pure land sutra paintings and the experiences of
their life.
Third, even without the historical record of the dance position which plays
“pipa” (a plucked string instrument with a fretted fingerboard) upside down, can
still find the so called “pipa dance” from the dancer’s skillful posturing, the
space, the position and so on …of the West pure land sutra paintings, as well as
from the discussions of the instruments holds by the dancers in the literature.
The dance scene of West pure land sutra paintings refers the most magnificent
luxury of royal palace to show the concrete image of the West pure land, and
expect to attract the blasting fuse audiences to believe in Buddha and willing to
go the West heavenly world after death by describing the most happiest things in
lives.
