Many scholars regard high-level visual ambiguity of preliminary sketches as a crucial factor for creative design (Fish & Scrivener,1990; Goel, 1995; Goldschmidt, 1991; Purcell and Gero, 1998; Verstijnen et al., 1998). Design activity contains a serial visual analogy, as visual clues sketches provided are more ambiguous, designers are subject to cognitive uncertainty. This will facilitate reinterpretation of designers to search for more alternatives to lessen the uncertainty (Tseng,2006). The purpose of this research is to explore how visual uncertainty facilitates the creative design ideation and to reveal other possibilities of innovation. This study contains two experiments. The first one is reinterpretation of sketches experiment. First, the mission is to offer 42 subjects three different levels of ambiguity of sketch references to watch and produce table concept sketches, and the protocol date will be recorded by a retraction of experiment. The result revealed that 21 expert subjects and 21 novice subjects differentiated form design experience produced 428 table concept sketches. Next, a coding system will be set up based on the protocol date to analyze how ambiguous references influence design strategies of designers. The second experiment is to do creative scores. A score questionnaire will be built by Visual Basic software, and 10 expert designers will grade the innovation, originality, and practicality of 3D table concept sketches which was converted from previous free-hand sketches. Finally, a synthesized discussion of two experiments’ results will be given with statistics. The result of this research suggested that expertise is a factor to promote visual ambiguity facilitating more discoveries and explorations of design ideation. The visual ambiguity would stimulate expert designers to discover hidden shapes of sketches and offer more flexible association. It is one method to facilitate creative thinking, but it is not a crucial factor to produce final creative presentation. Sei-Wo Tseng 曾誰我 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 126 zh-TW
