Image data captured by the cameras are analyzed with image processing algorithm to detect fire flame in real-time, and then the calibrated stereo vision system is implementation to obtain 3D location of fire. The fire flame has characteristics of luminous, dynamic, and exceptional color and irregular shape change. The detection system proposed by this paper is based on these characteristics to check the possibility of fire. When fire is detected, the proposed system can calculate the position of the fire, and communicate with the microcontroller to control fire extinguishing apparatus to aim and discharge water automatically. The fire extinguishing condition is continuously monitored by the proposed system, and shut off automatically when the fire is completely doused. After extinguishing task is completed, the fire detection system can switch function to monitor the surrounding continuously. When fire happens in the dead area right below one of the camera position, the fire position can still be identified by another camera with the proposed detection system and perform extinguishing procedures.
