A wireless sensor network consists of a number of sensors and a sink. In a wireless sensor network, data sensed by each sensor may be transmitted back to the sink using wireless transmissions for further processing. In recent years, how to design an efficient data aggregation scheme has become an important research issue in wireless sensor networks. In this thesis, an efficient data aggregation scheme means a data transmission scheme that allows the data sensed by the sensors to be transmitted successfully back to the sink with a higher probability even when there exist failure nodes. In the other words, an efficient data aggregation scheme possesses a better fault tolerance capability. Among researches related to data aggregation schemes, one approach named the designated path (DP) scheme has been designed. The DP scheme is mainly applied to a special type of wireless sensor networks with a multi-parent multi-child hierarchical structure. In this thesis, we call such networks “hierarchical structured wireless sensor networks” for the sake of brevity. In this thesis, we design an efficient data aggregation scheme for hierarchical structured wireless sensor networks. In our scheme, the constraints of designated paths and routing tables used by the DP scheme are relieved such that the data aggregation function of each sensor may be fully used and thus energy-efficient data transmissions may be obtained. After an analysis, we find that by relieving the constraints of designated paths and routing tables, the fault tolerance capability of our data aggregation scheme is better than the fault tolerance capability of the DP scheme. Computer simulation results show that compared with the DP scheme, although our data aggregation scheme does not perform well in terms of total energy consumption and network lifetime, it possesses a much better fault tolerance capability.
