Deinstitutionalization is the process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services for those diagnosed with a mental disorder. To realize deinstitutionalization, this study aims to understand the usage of involvement in social activities and time management by collecting daily activities of psychiatric patients from different treatment modes, i.e. outpatients, inpatients and day Care Center. The results will provide the government agencies at issues valuable suggestions for policy setting of rehabilitation. This cross-sectional survey study with stratum sampling recruited schizophrenic patients from outpatients, inpatients and day care center. A total of 60 valid psychiatric patients’ data were collected. Questionnaires and data used in this study included individual activity data and health-related quality of life(HRQoL). The results were summarized is as follows. 1、The relational analysis of social activity and HRQoL showed that exercise significantly correlated with the social dimension of HRQoL ( γ=.300). On the contrary, static activity shows a negative relation with the HRQoL social dimension (γ=-.208). 2、The important predictors of social HRQoL of the schizophrenic patients included perceived health condition, perceived happiness, static activity, and exercise. 3、Although the outpatients have more diversified activities, they spend more time on static activity such as sleeping than those from other treatment modes. As a result, outpatients scored lower in social HRQoL than others, i.e inpatients and day care center patients had better social HRQoL than outpatients. The results has implications for government agencies and policy makers. The policy makers need to integrate the network resources in communities to assist psychiatric patients in the community to use the resources in an efficient and timely manner, which in turn will improve their social quality of life.
