Poly(alkyll methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) based monolith as the stationary phase were studied, which were used to investigate the relationship between the stationary phases and the six different aromatic rings of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs have a wealth of π electrons, showing the strong π-π interaction with DVB. However, this interaction resulted to long retention time and peak tailing which eventually resulted to decreased sensitivity, poor precision, difficulty in quantitation and poor resolution. Therefore, the type and the ratio of alkyl methacrylates with respect to the DVB crosslinker were optimized and the effect of these parameters on the retention time, retention factor and tailing factor was studied. Moreover, the optimized parameters were applied to the 16 types of PAHs using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) tandem ion trap mass spectrometer system. The detection limit of the 16 PAHs can be reduced to 0.0011-0.0375 ppm which are within the specification range set by the regulatory agencies of Germany and the United States (0.1ppm) for these carcinogens.
