A large amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is thus unavoidable, while recycling and treatment of WEEE become an important issue consequently. WEEEs include numerous items, considering the resource affordable for authorities, willingness of producers, and the treatment capacity of recycling facilities, it is hardly possible to recycle all items at once in Taiwan. A proper and practical way to recycle WEEEs may be to divide them into appropriate categories first and then determine mandatory recycling WEEE category step by step. Therefore, considering different stages of WEEE recycling i.e., resident separation, WEEE collection, WEEE storage and treatment, classification factors including convenience, economic incentives, economic value and hazardous substances are analyzed by Self Organizing Map(SOM) to determine appropriate categories for WEEE. The results indicated in addition to the implementation of products, divided into nine categories might be sufficient in consideration of aforementioned factors. Respective recycling strategies were also explored. In order to determine the recycling priority of various WEEE categories, the total weight and the proportion of hazardous substances of a category are evaluated.
