Based on the needs of traceability information, this research develops an ontology-based traceability information system that aims to keeping the complete electronic records cover the information about the activities since the time from producers of raw materials to consumers. Therefore, consumers can access the traceability information about products very quickly. To ensure the safety of products, a traceability information system can provide consumers the traceability information about the biotechnological product openly and transparently. Consequently, producers will possess better competitive advantages due to providing consumers the transparent traceability information about products. This research proposes a framework for developing an ontology-based traceability information system according to the procedures specified by the Pharmaceutical Inspection Convention and Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S). An empirical study is conducted in a biotechnology company in south Taiwan. Questionnaire respondents include persons in the survey company who manage the activities of traceability information about biotechnological products. The weights of evaluating criteria are computed using the AHP method. The findings of this research indicate that major factors affecting the application performance ranks as follows: system quality (63.6%), operational benefits (25.5%), and information and application knowledge (10.9%). In summary, an ontology-based traceability information system can be used to reduce the workload and reduction of total costs, and improve the quality of work and its efficiency. Besides, a traceability information system can provide comprehensive traceability information to producers and consumers for making a better purchase decision.
