The overall process of mechanism synthesis consists of type synthesis, number synthesis, and dimensional synthesis. Dimensional synthesis is concerned with the determination of the suitable dimensions of the mechanism to satisfy the motion requirement or performance. The areas of usual synthesis problems contain path generation, function generation, and motion generation. This thesis studies the dimensional synthesis of planar mechanisms with equivalent motion generation and finds the available types of mechanisms and the dimensional range of link size in order to improve the design quality and save the design cost. At first, the four-bar linkages are adopted as the motion generators and dyad method is applied to synthesize theses mechanisms. The synthesis equations of three types of dyads, RR, RP, and PR, are derived and are used to the dimensional synthesis of four-bar linkages by the combination of two dyads. Furthermore, the position analyses of the synthesized mechanisms proceed to verify the availability and accuracy of these mechanisms while their coupler curves are also derived to check the motion requirements. In the research, mathematical software MathCAD is used to achieve the synthesis and analysis of the motion generators. Meanwhile, applying drawing software AutoCAD and its accessories, Visual LISP and DCL, accomplishes the software system of mechanism synthesis of four-bar motion generators in order to compare the qualities of various equivalent mechanisms.
