Her works focus on the journey and struggle of women’s pursuit of romance since Japanese colonization to contemporary era. Liao is considered a neo-feminism writer. Her writing is polished, and the plot is rooted in real life. In addition to illustrating the romance of urban women, her works also touch upon love stories of oversea students. In a word, her fictions center on women’s marriage, romance, and erotic world. For women, affection is an indispensable part of life, and Liao faithfully presents working women’s struggle in romance. These are important lessons for contemporary women. Three conclusions are made in the present study. First of all, her depiction of women’s romance in roman-fleuve era focuses on the romance in marriage and the powerlessness in pursuit of romance. Marriage seems to equal to love. Second, in her urban fiction era, she pays more attention to affectionate love, drawing upon having the authority to pursue one’s own romance but remaining a passive stance in romance. Finally, in her erotic fiction era, women become active pursuer of love. The characters are not satisfied with pursuing romance, but they further seek the unity of affectionate satisfaction and physical pleasure. In some of her works, female characters may sacrifice parenthood to their pursuit of romance. Studying Hui-Ying Liao’s fiction helps readers to understand not only the journey of women’s pursuit of love, but also women’s subtle, inner world from her description of female characters. Readers can further realize the “symptoms” of contemporary romantic relationships that though contemporary women have gained independence, autonomy, and equality, it is unquestionable that the traditional value system shared by the society still deeply impacts women’s fate. 未提供 江惜美 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 262 zh-TW |

Since Hui-Ying Liao earned her reputation in 1982 by her short fiction Ah Fei, she has published 34 fictions till 2005.
