Hence, China can be regarded as the native soil of tea culture. Tea plays a special and venerated role as a beverage in Chinese culture, and can be regarded as the national drink of the Chinese people. Cultural aesthetics of tea developed quickly in Taiwan since the appearance of the term “Art of Tea” during the 1970s. Many social groups and institutions began to actively promote of tea aesthetics, and to this day, tea aesthetics have become an iconic feature of Taiwanese culture. Through reviewing the theories and literature on the culture of tea aesthetics, this research investigated historical legacies of tea culture and observed the cultural development of tea aesthetics. This paper attempted to organize the past and present of Taiwan’s tea industry and development of tea culture into four perspectives of tea consumers, tea spirituality, art of tea preparation and tea aesthetics. Observational research was carried out to investigate the essence of tea aesthetics and analyze its relationship with Chinese tea culture and Japanese Chado, and to assess the value of tea aesthetics in Taiwan from social, customary and economic perspectives.
